With our economy still in a fragile state it has been a difficult year for food banks and families in Ontario.  A recent study released by the OAFB reported that food banks are busier than ever. Food bank usage increased by 19% between fall 2008 and fall 2009, resulting in 375,000 Ontarians turning to their neighbourhood food bank for support each month. One third of these individuals were either employed full - or part time or unemployed for less than six months.  Just having a job does not guarantee a livable income. The combination of low wages and high rents means that a growing number of working people must rely on food banks. Kawartha Food Share along with its member agencies will continue to do their part in the community to help alleviate hunger.

Most non for profit organizations rely on devoted volunteers who put in countless hours putting together food hampers, serving meals through soup kitchens, helping with school breakfast / lunch programs and providing support at our shelters and drop in centres.

Thank you to those who continue to make financial and food donations. We are fortunate to live in such a caring community.

Warehouse notes:
A significant amount of product has been recieved from Quaker and from the Ontario Association of Food Banks. There has also been an increase in requests from food banks for more food. Some of the food banks that int he past would pick up food periodically are now coming for pick-ups on a regular, weekly basis.
